PAGE: Tell me something about yourself, please:
Gul Muhammad Lot: I began my professional journey in the 1980s by joining the family business while simultaneously pursuing a Master’s in Political Science from the University of Sindh, Hyderabad. In addition to this the graduation with a degree in Economics, provided me with a strong foundation in business and market dynamics. My career later took a significant turn into politics, as I was elected as Member of Provisional Assembly in 1990. Following with the Minister of Environment in 1993 and Minister of Anti-Corruption in 2008. Then was elected as Member of Senate in 2009. This shift was driven by a deep commitment to national service and community development, values that continue to shape my work today.

PAGE: It is said that approximately $2bn are donated by Pakistanis per year. What is your standpoint in this regard?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Pakistanis are known for their generosity, donating substantial amount annually to support those in need. Organisations like Seylani Welfare, JDC, Alamgir Welfare, etc. provide meals, financial aid, and medical assistance to underprivileged individuals. Companies like Mehran Food also contribute by donating food products to these organisations, ensuring quality meals for those in need. During Ramazan, the spirit of giving grows stronger, with people distributing money, clothing and food.
Beyond daily assistance, charitable efforts focus on improving education, healthcare, and livelihoods for disadvantaged communities. Welfare organisations and individuals work tirelessly to support struggling families, ensuring they receive proper care and opportunities. Many people regularly donate to schools, hospitals, and orphanages, strengthening Pakistan’s commitment to social welfare. This continuous generosity reflects deep-rooted values of compassion and unity within Pakistani society.
PAGE Pakistanis are large-hearted people who empty their pockets at the slightest hint of another’s need. What is your perspective on it?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Pakistanis have a remarkable spirit of generosity, deeply embedded in their culture. Whether it’s responding to natural disasters, supporting orphans, or helping struggling families, people across the country step forward without hesitation. Their kindness is evident in the way they contribute to various causes, from building schools and hospitals to funding scholarships and feeding the hungry.
At Mehran Foods, we take great pride in being part of this philanthropic culture. Through partnerships with organizations like The Shine Humanity, we help provide medical aid in underserved areas, ensuring that even the most vulnerable receive essential healthcare services. Additionally, many businesses and individuals in Pakistan actively support community welfare initiatives, demonstrating that the nation’s charitable spirit goes beyond mere donations — it is a way of life that strengthens society as a whole.
Mehran Foods also plays its part by collaborating with organisations like The Shine Humanity to support underprivileged communities. In remote areas like Tharparkar, we Mehran Foods provide free medicines and medical facilities to those in need. Additionally, many Pakistanis donate to welfare organisations daily, ensuring continuous support for struggling families. These ongoing charitable efforts reflect the strong humanitarian spirit that unites the people of Pakistan.
PAGE: Religious tradition mandates discretion in charity with the intention of protecting the identity and dignity of every beneficiary. What is your take on it?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Religious teachings emphasise that charity should be given discreetly to safeguard the dignity and identity of those in need. In our society, we ensure that assistance is provided without any religious discrimination, helping people solely based on their needs. In my district, where 40% of the population is non-Muslim, I actively support underprivileged communities. I contribute by installing RO plants for clean water, building temples, and providing healthcare, education, and financial aid to struggling families.
Many individuals and organisations in Pakistan follow the same values, extending support to the poor regardless of their faith. I remain committed to helping those in need while ensuring their self-respect is maintained. Across the country, people generously donate food, money, and resources to uplift
struggling communities. This strong culture of charity highlights Pakistan’s spirit of compassion, unity, and humanitarian service.
PAGE: How would you comment on charity organizations?
Gul Muhammad Lot: Charity organizations play a crucial role in uplifting underprivileged communities by providing education, healthcare, food, and financial assistance. While there have been concerns about mismanagement of funds in certain cases, it is important to recognize the many reputable welfare organizations that make a significant impact. Groups such as Edhi Foundation, Saylani Welfare, and Chhipa Welfare tirelessly work to support those in need, ensuring that aid reaches the right people.
Pakistan, as a nation, has a deeply ingrained culture of giving, and countless individuals and businesses contribute to social welfare. Organisations like Mehran Foods also participate in these efforts, ensuring food security for struggling communities. By promoting transparency and accountability in charitable work, we can continue to strengthen Pakistan’s tradition of generosity and make a lasting difference in people’s lives.
